The second edition of the Tirana Biennale, the biggest contemporary art event in Albania and the Balkans, opens on September 12th 2003.
Structured around the theme of the U-Topos, the Tirana Biennale 2 brings together more than 100 artists and a large number of art professionals from all over the world. Curators, art critics, experts, journalists, and art lovers are offered not only a vibrant show, but also a different contact with a country rich of cultural tradition and breathtaking landscapes. Many of the participating artists have been invited to realize their works in Tirana, engaging with the Albanian context and its multifaceted reality. In addition, a series of public works and artistic interventions on buildings, facades, and in public spaces, will become permanent inscriptions in the city.
The first Tirana Biennale successfully provided a show as diverse in drives and energy as the city itself, and created an atmosphere of communication and collaboration between artists, curators, the city and its people. During one and a half months, the Biennale reached a wide audience, including the record-breaking participation of 20.000 local visitors.
Tirana Biennale 2 expresses the urge of an expanding, ambitious creative arena to communicate with a larger international context. While its point of departure has radically changed since the first Biennale, continuity is a crucial priority in order to establish a lasting network and cooperation. The Tirana Biennale 2 offers a critical and exciting event which questions and connects to the international contemporary art scene, simultaneously providing the world with an alternative image of Albania.
Tirana Biennale 2 is the result of the joint efforts of the Tirana Biennale Institute and the Municipality of Tirana, and its Mayor Mr. Edi Rama. Dont miss this unique opportunity to experience a vibrant energy, an emerging country and a rapidly developing art scene in an international setting.
Tirana Biennale 2 is open from September 13th till October 25th, 2003.
